The adventures of the mythological
character Jason and his Argonauts is brought to life in
this
amazing and timeless classic. The story revolves around Jason who returns to
the kingdom of Thessaly after his family and home where conquered by Pelias
who in the process killed his father. Jason returns after 20 years
and by accident saves Pelias's life. Pelias takes Jason to his camp there
Jason reveals to him his desire to kill Pelias and find the Golden Fleece, but Pelias deceives him
posing as someone else and tells Jason not to reveal himself to the king but
to search for the fleece first. But alas the Gods are on Jason's side, he is
transported to Mt Olympus by Hermes where Hera tells him that Zeus has given
her the opportunity to help him on his quest and tells Jason to search for the
fleece in the land of Colchis at the very end of the world. Jason organizes
some olympic games so that the best warriors of Greece can compete to win a
place in the quest for the fleece on the ship called the Argo. With the help of the Goddess Hera and a group brave
of warriors which include Hercules, Castor and other famous mythological heroes
set sail to Colchis.
But Before Jason
can reach his destination he encounters Talos a 100 ft tall statue made of
pure bronze that comes to life and attacks them and destroys the ship in the
Isle of Bronze. Upon the defeat of the giant Talos they are guided by Hera
to visit Phineeas a blind Prophet who is very wise but is being
tormented by two Harpies sent from Zeus as a punishment. Phinneas is willing to help the
Argonauts if they help him by getting rid of the Harpies. The Argonauts
prepare a trap for the harpies and are successful, Phinneas tells Jason that
only way to get to Colchis is thru the clashing rocks,
a pair of rock formations that come alive and destroy any ship that wanders
by their waters.
Jason traverses
the waters and witnesses the destruction of a merchant ship, but the Gods help Jason
when Triton emerges from the deep waters and creates a barrier between their
ship and the Clashing rocks. After navigating thru the dangerous channel
Jason and the rest rescue the survivors of the destroyed ship, one of them
is Medea the high priestess of Hecate patron Goddess of the city of Colchis. In Colchis
king Aeetes at first welcomes the Argonauts but then in a complete rage he
accuses them of being pirates and murderers and sends them to prison...all
this by the word of Acastus the son of
Pelias. That very night Medea rescues Jason and some of the Argonauts, she
guides Jason to the location of the fleece but before him stands the many
headed Hydra the guardian of the Fleece. Jason fights with the giant snake
and kills it, they escape but Aeetes and his men arrive and see that the Hydra is
dead, he commands his men to gather the teeth of the Hydra and prays to the
Goddess Hecate
to bring forth the children of the night...7 skeletons of long dead warriors
who serve Aeetes. He commands them to kill and destroy Jason and his band of
thieves. Jason is the only one who survives the attack from the children of
the Hydra's teeth by jumping off the cliff and swimming to the ship. In the
end Jason takes the Fleece and Medea with him and is believed he returns to
Thessaly and takes his throne as the true
king.
Creatures to look out for:
Trivia:
-
Jason and the Argonauts
took nearly two years to complete and a cost of $3 Million
dollars the most expensive production for the team yet.
-
Todd Armstrong's voice
was dubbed for the film because Columbia felt that his
American accent didn't mix with dominant British cast. Todd
did had a good speaking voice by the way..
-
The cost to build the
Argo was $250,000 which was a huge portion of the overall
budget. After production Charles H. Schneer sold it to
Century-Fox who used it in the Actium sea battle in
Cleopatra.
-
Would you believe that
the plaster skeletons used in the scene where Jason plunges
into the sea at the end of the film are believe to still be
there somewhere by the cliffs edge.
